What is exact
Fahrenheit and Celsius use an exact formula
The temperature-scale conversion is mathematical. Subtract 32 from Fahrenheit and multiply by 5/9 to get Celsius. Multiply Celsius by 9/5 and add 32 to go back to Fahrenheit.
Oven dials are usually marked in 5, 10 or 25 degree steps, so a recipe may round the exact equivalent to a practical setting.
What is approximate
Fan and convection adjustments are starting points
A fan moves hot air around the food, so many manufacturers advise a lower setting than a traditional recipe. This calculator uses one documented starting rule—25°F lower—then converts that fan setting to Celsius. Oven design, pan colour, rack position, food and recipe method can all change the result.
If either gives a specific fan setting, follow it. Check food at the earliest stated time rather than assuming a temperature adjustment leaves the cooking time unchanged.

Common oven temperature chart
These are rounded kitchen settings, not additional exact unit definitions. The chart's fan and Gas Mark columns reproduce rounded manufacturer reference rows; the interactive calculator applies its separately cited 25°F-lower rule consistently.

- NIST SI Units — Temperature provides the exact °F/°C formulas and approximate legacy oven descriptions.
- Electrolux convection-bake guidance says a convection setting is usually about 25°F lower than a traditional recipe.

Common questions
Oven conversion answers
What is 350°F in Celsius?
The exact conversion is about 176.7°C. Most recipe and oven charts round that to 180°C for a conventional oven.
What fan setting replaces 350°F?
A common starting point is about 325°F, or roughly 160–165°C, but use the recipe or oven manual when it gives specific advice.
Is Gas Mark an exact temperature scale?
Treat it as a practical oven-setting chart. This calculator returns the closest listed Gas Mark and shows the reference row so you can see the approximation.
