A unit and a reference answer different questions
Psi, bar, kilopascals, and atmospheres are units used to express pressure. Gauge, absolute, and differential describe the reference against which pressure is measured. A unit converter can change psi into bar while preserving the same physical pressure difference, but it cannot infer or change the reference basis from an unlabeled number.
Absolute pressure is referenced to a vacuum. Gauge pressure is commonly referenced to the surrounding atmosphere, so ordinary gauge pressure reads near zero when exposed to local air. Differential pressure compares two selected points. The labels psig, psia, barg, and bara are often used to make the reference explicit, although source conventions should still be checked.
Worked example: a tire reading
Suppose a tire gauge reads 35 psi gauge. Converting the pressure difference with the stored factor gives about 2.413 bar gauge. That result remains gauge pressure because only the unit changed.
To estimate absolute pressure, local atmospheric pressure must be added in compatible units. Using standard atmosphere only as an example, 35 psig plus about 14.696 psi gives about 49.696 psia, or about 3.426 bara. Actual atmospheric pressure varies with weather and elevation, so standard atmosphere is not a substitute for a measured local reference when precision matters.

Why the distinction affects equipment
Tire inflation, many shop tools, and some process instruments commonly use gauge pressure. Vacuum work, thermodynamic calculations, and some gas-law applications require absolute pressure. Differential sensors may report a filter drop, flow-related pressure difference, or pressure across a surface.
Using 2 bar absolute where a specification calls for 2 bar gauge can create a large error near atmospheric pressure. Before converting a specification, inspect the instrument label, datasheet, diagram, and operating context for the pressure reference. If it remains ambiguous, ask the equipment manufacturer or responsible engineer rather than choosing the interpretation that looks familiar.
Keep reference and unit through every step
Write the reference in intermediate calculations: for example, 240 kPa(abs) or 35 psi(g). Convert all terms to a common unit before adding or subtracting a reference pressure. Never add a pressure expressed in psi directly to one expressed in kPa.
A useful direction check is scale: one bar is about 14.5 psi, so a psi-to-bar number should be much smaller. A standard atmosphere is 101.325 kPa. These anchors catch reversed factors, but they do not validate an instrument's calibration or reference mode.
Limits for safety and regulated work
Pressure systems can store dangerous energy. A browser converter is not a calibration certificate, relief-valve setting procedure, or substitute for an equipment manual. Use rated instruments and the governing safety procedure for tires, compressed gas, pressure vessels, diving, aviation, medical equipment, and industrial processes.
